Decoding the Different Types of Lehengas: Choosing the Right Fit

by Sunita Sharma 03 Feb 2024

Lehengas, with their timeless charm and versatility, have become a staple in the wardrobes of individuals seeking a perfect blend of tradition and contemporary style. However, the plethora of lehenga styles available can make choosing the right fit a daunting task. In this blog post, we'll decode the different types of lehengas, providing insights into their characteristics and helping you make an informed decision for various occasions.

1. A-Line Lehenga: Characterized by its A-shaped silhouette, the A-line lehenga is fitted at the waist and gradually flares out towards the hem. This style is universally flattering and suits various body types. A-line lehengas are a popular choice for weddings, receptions, and festive occasions.

2. Flared Lehenga: Known for its voluminous flare and circular cut, the flared lehenga creates a dramatic and luxurious look. It features wide panels that add layers and movement to the garment. This style is ideal for grand celebrations such as weddings and receptions, offering a regal and traditional appearance.

3. Mermaid or Fishtail Lehenga: Inspired by Western silhouettes, the mermaid or fishtail lehenga is fitted at the waist and hips, then flares out dramatically from the knee or lower calf. This style accentuates the curves and is a contemporary choice for cocktail parties, receptions, or engagement ceremonies.

4. Straight-Cut Lehenga: The straight-cut lehenga, also known as a panelled lehenga, features a straight fall from the waist to the hem. It offers a sleek and modern look, making it suitable for more casual occasions, sangeet ceremonies, or daytime events. This style is often paired with crop tops or short kurtis.

5. Lehenga with Trail: Adding a touch of glamour, lehengas with trails feature an extended fabric trail attached to the hem of the lehenga. This style is perfect for brides who want to make a grand entrance at their wedding or reception. The trail adds a sense of drama and sophistication to the overall look.

6. Lehenga with Jacket: Combining traditional and contemporary elements, lehengas with jackets feature a long jacket worn over a blouse or crop top. The jacket can be heavily embroidered or embellished, offering a regal and elegant appearance. This style is suitable for weddings, receptions, or formal events.

7. Circular Lehenga: Similar to the flared lehenga, the circular lehenga is known for its circular cut that creates a wide and flowing silhouette. This style is often heavily embroidered or adorned with intricate details, making it a popular choice for bridal wear and traditional celebrations.

8. Lehenga with Asymmetrical Hem: For a modern and edgy look, consider a lehenga with an asymmetrical hemline. This style features a hemline that is longer on one side, adding a contemporary twist to the traditional lehenga. It's a versatile choice for cocktail parties, mehendi ceremonies, or engagement events.

9. Sharara Lehenga: Blurring the lines between lehengas and palazzo suits, the sharara lehenga features wide-legged pants paired with a short kurta or crop top. This fusion style is perfect for sangeet ceremonies, mehendi functions, or pre-wedding events, offering comfort and style.

10. Panelled Lehenga: Panelled lehengas consist of multiple panels stitched together to create a flared look. Each panel can be embellished or embroidered, adding richness and texture to the lehenga. This style is versatile and can be worn for weddings, receptions, or festive occasions.

Conclusion: Choosing the right lehenga involves considering your body type, the occasion, and your personal style preferences. Whether you opt for the classic A-line, the dramatic flared silhouette, or the modern mermaid cut, understanding the characteristics of different lehenga styles will empower you to make a confident and stylish choice for any celebration or event.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
